Some quick updates:

1.  Band & Orchestra Booster Meeting 10/13, 7:00pm -- 

If you are receiving this message, congratulations!  You are a part of BOPA :)  Every parent/guardian of a MHS band or orchestra student is automatically a member of our booster group.  The boosters really make MHS orchestra what it is by supporting our classes, Philomusica, guest artists, travel, and the countless other experiences that make our program special.

Our booster kick-off meeting this year is from 7:00-8:00pm next Tuesday, October 13th.  Please reserve this time at all possible -- especially if you have a freshman student!

2.  MHS BOPA Website

The MHS BOPA website is packed with information, pictures, and more.  At a point when we would return to in-person classes and activities, the website will be a go-to place for details.  Check it out at   https://www.middletonbandorchestra.org

3.  Spiritwear coming soon! 

Sometime in the next month the MCPASD Orchestras will be selling Orchestra Spiritwear.  Featuring our classy logo, there will be clothing items and other collectibles.  Have an idea for something we should add to our cart?  Drop me an email!

4. Classwork

Ask your students about the work they are doing in orchestra classes.  While we are not able to perform together in a large group, some of the assignments are leading us toward some great projects together and the work I am seeing from your students is really impressive.  Students should complete about 1 assignment per week to be on target for the semester.

5. Philomusica is working with Mark Wood again!

Philomusica, our extra-curricular eclectic string ensemble, is beginning work soon over Zoom.  All orchestra students are welcome to join with no audition.  We will be working over the first semester toward a project with Mark Wood, the founding violinist for the Trans-Siberian Orchestra.  We will be choosing a fun tune to prepare, we will work virtually with Mr. Wood, and then his staff will put together a virtual music video featuring our students.  Stay tuned!

4. Trabajo en clase

I wanted to share a few updates as we move into our second month of virtual school.

1.  Band and Orchestra Booster Meeting 10/13, 7:00 pm -- 

If you are receiving this message, congratulations!  You are a part of BOPA :)  Every parent/guardian of an MHS band or orchestra student is automatically a member of our booster group.  The boosters really make MHS band what it is by supporting our marching band, jazz bands, guest artists, travel, and the countless other experiences that make our program special.

Our booster kick-off meeting this year is from 7:00-8:00pm next Tuesday, October 13th.  Please reserve this time at all possible -- especially if you have a freshman student!

2.  Jazz Auditions Coming Up --

Audition materials for the MHS jazz bands are available now!  Check your BUZZ landing page.  About half of all MHS band students participate in jazz each year, and you should too!  Even if you've never played in a jazz band before, we are still planning to have bands for all levels of experience.  You can play the advanced audition, the intermediate audition, or even the "no-audition" audition.  See the audition materials for details.

3.  Jazz Bands Starting Soon -- 

Our booster kick-off meeting this year is from 7:00-8:00 pm next Tuesday, October 13th.  Please reserve this time at all possible -- especially if you have a freshman student!tracurricular activities to meet in small groups.  If we are allowed to meet safely in person, we will absolutely do so, although students will not be required to attend in person in order to participate.

4.  When should I be hearing my student practice their instrument? --

- Students should be continuing to practice regularly, but once per week at a minimum.  Each week, there is a short recording that is due, with an interactive video lesson in BUZZ.  (The week 3 etude is due tonight.)

This year, WSMA is running two separate virtual festival cycles.  The first cycle will have video submissions due in December with State in January; the second cycle will have submissions due in April with State in May.  More info to come.

August 11, 2020 - Welcome Back 2020-2021 / 11 de agosto de 2020 - Bienvenido de nuevo 2020-2021

Marching Band, including color guard and drumline, is canceled for now. The Big 8 has postponed all fall sporting competitions, which means no football games and no marching band. Additionally, WSMA has canceled the marching band state championships in October. If circumstances permit, we will consider a winter season for drumline and color guard (WGI). If football games and marching competitions are rescheduled for the spring, we could also consider the feasibility of a spring marching band show.

As we near the beginning of the 2020-21 school year, we wanted to reach out as a band department to fill you in on everything we know so far about the upcoming school year. Yesterday should have been the first day of marching band percussion/color guard camp, and while we are mourning the loss of so many events past and future, we are very excited to start synchronous classes and get back to learning.

1. Cancellations/Postponements -

Marching Band, including color guard and drumline, is canceled for now. The Big 8 has postponed all fall sporting competitions, which means no football games and no marching band. Additionally, WSMA has canceled the marching band state championships in October. If circumstances permit, we will consider a winter season for drumline and color guard (WGI). If football games and marching competitions are rescheduled for the spring, we could also consider the feasibility of a spring marching band show.

Jazz Band Auditions are postponed for now.  The fate of co-curricular activities like jazz band is still up in the air.  If and when we are permitted to have rehearsals or even small group sectionals, we will be able to revisit jazz band.

In-Person Classes and Rehearsals will of course not take place until the school allows for in-person activities. When this happens, we are optimistic about the possibility of (optionally) playing instruments live and in person. If you are interested, we encourage you to check out the ongoing NFHS study of playing musical instruments safely during COVID.

2. What will virtual band class look like?

We’re excited that the school has allowed for synchronous learning in the new online schedule. Unfortunately, technology does not allow for synchronous performance, but we will be taking advantage of the zoom/google meet format to cover some fun and useful topics that we don’t usually have time for.  There will be two components to the class:

A) Solo Preparation: this is the “independent” part of the class. Students will work on a WSMA-list solo piece and on their personal technique and will check in regularly with teachers. The school’s expectation is about 1 hour of homework per class each week, although students may want to practice more. This time will allow students to maintain their skills so that we can get back to normal as soon as possible when we are able.

B) Live Class Options: the synchronous part of the class will involve a choice of short units in the style of “band camp” offerings. These classes will build fun, useful and relevant skills that we don’t always get to in band class. All activities for these units will take place during class (no homework), although resources for extra enrichment will be available.

3. What About the “Fully Virtual” Option?

The latest info we have is that “students who choose to go fully online will ... be able to take part in the large ensembles with the requirement that they come in person for  those classes if we return to the building at some point.”  This is all the information we have available at this time.

4. What If I Use A School Instrument?

If you already have a school instrument, we can arrange for you to keep it. If you need to get or return a school instrument, stay tuned! We’re working with the school to figure out the distribution.
